Californian man goes to jail for improving property

Sounds extreme? Well maybe but considering that he had no planning permission, well yes it still sounds a little extreme.

Francisco Linares from Rolling Hills Estates, California, decided that he would be making a few minor improvements to his property, by building a fence, a small retaining wall, a patio and some small concrete posts along the driveway.

But the local authorities did not like the changes and gave him six months to either apply for the required planning permission or to remove the additions as part of an agreement previously made. Unfortunately for Mr. Linares he did neither and so found himself handed a six month jail sentence.

However all is not clear on this case, as it appears there have been a few cases starting in 2004 and the whole thing has just reached breaking point.
